This series comprises records created or retained by persons responsible for coordinating ELCA mission activities in Namibia. These records were generated during the course of documenting, monitoring, and publicizing projects, programs, and general updates pertaining to the efforts to practice the accompaniment model of mission whereby the ELCA's Division for Global Mission (DGM) walks with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia (ELCN) and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Namibia (ELCRN) in mission efforts. The records date from 1979-2001. The date range precedes the existence of the ELCA because certain records were retained permanently by the area program director and as such were kept in this series for continuity purposes. This series comprises several accessions received into the ELCA Archives and as such includes records of the program directors mentioned in this series' background: the Rev. James L. Knutson, the Rev. Daniel W. Olson, and the Rev. Benyam A. Kassahun. Record types include business correspondence, annual reports, topical reports, meeting minutes, meeting summaries, invoices, requests for payment, news articles, newspaper clippings, publications, pamphlets, booklets, worship bulletins, architectural drawings, audit reports, project proposals, project progress reports, and trip reports. Records are arranged into three main subseries, the first two representing the two church bodies in Namibia with which the ELCA works. The remaining subseries are records of a general nature that pertain to ELCA mission work in Namibia. Subject matter of these records includes medical work, church high schools and the seminary used by both church bodies, adult literacy efforts, scholarships, efforts to combat HIV/AIDS, purchasing of books for Paulinum Seminary, records related to purchase and upkeep of DGM vehicles for use in the mission area, companion synod programs with ELCA synods, and efforts to work with the cooperative organization the Council of Churches in Namibia.
